American Bank Note Plate Numbers

American Bank Note Co. Die Numbers 1882-1927

During the period from 1882 to 1927 The ABN Co, of New York engraved, and hence produced Die Proofs;
for all of the stamps of Canada, and some of the stamp for the United States.
The company also produced dies for the stamps of several South American countries.

This was the period in which the ABN Co. adopted the practise of first producing an 'unhardened' proof
with only the imprint of the company; and later adding a die number after the die had been 'hardened'.

The company followed this practise for those years in which it had the contracts to produce the dies.
It was followed for the stamps of Canada from 1897-1927; for those of the USA from 1882-1893;
and for those of Newfoundland from 1897-1908.

The die number consisted of first, a letter which seems to denote the series;
and second a number which indicated the order in which the dies were prepared.

Those dies beginning with the letters XG may have actually been produced by the Canadian Bank Note Co.
It is reasonable to assume that a new company might have some way to distinguish its own work, and so
it is possible that a new series was started for the new company.
The CBN Co. was established in 1922 and there is no known documentation that indicated the exact date
on which the new company started to engrave its own dies.
